Become the Righteousness of God in Him

2 Cor 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might
become the righteousness of God in Him.

Often when we hear or read the phrase “might become,” we tend to believe that righteousness is achieved if we try or work really hard to do the right things. If we obey the Bible enough, or what we are taught or told in church enough, we can become righteous. If we do enough right things, we will be right with God or accepted by God. Nothing could be further from the truth of the Word of God.

Let’s look at “might become” in the Greek. It means to have come into existence or, simply, to be.

When you and I receive Jesus as Lord and believe that He was raised from the dead, the divine nature of God is imparted to us from above. We are made a new creation in Christ Jesus. The righteousness of God is who and what we are. We are right with God because of who we are, not because of what we do. There is not enough obeying we can do to be in right standing with God. Our Lord Jesus did it all for us. He was made sin with our sin so that we “BE” (having come into existence) the righteousness of God.

When we receive righteousness by faith and not by works, the wonderful fruit of righteousness is manifested in and through our lives. Praise God for His wonderful grace.
